It's happening, because you tell us it is.

Villagers concerned about crime
Residents in two Nottinghamshire villages say anti-social behaviour has become so bad they are considering employing a private security firm.
An emergency meeting was called by villagers in Aslockton and Whatton after increasing reports of violence and nuisance behaviour.

Gaz Gallagher, who is from Whatton, said the villagers were fed up with verbal abuse and petty crime.

Police said they were working with the community to try to find a solution.

Drug taking

Mr Gallagher said: "We're cheesed off with the number of people depreciating our quality of life.

"We've had lots of little incidents of crime and vandalism, but lately we're getting serious assaults, drug taking and lots of excluded youngsters, and I feel we need to address these issues."

Pc John Neil from the Safer Neighbourhoods Team said he wanted to come up with a plan to tackle the problem.

"I want to look at setting up a local area group which is not necessarily run by police but by the community.

"I'll go away, research the residents' concerns and try to see how we will tackle them, then get together and see whether things have improved or not."

Pc Neil also urged people to come forward with problems. "A lot of people don't tell us what's happening, so please get in touch and tell me what's happening in the villages."

I do not wish to sound critical of PC Neil, I am sure he is a very good officer, and I am sure his vocation in life is to prevent crime but does anyone else think it's odd that we have a situation where the modern version of the village bobby admits to not knowing what goes off in is village?

Perhaps instead of have a 'Safer Neighbourhood Team' the police should instead have bobbies living and walking the beat in the villages that they are supposedly looking after?

Safer

I have noticed that the City Council has very thoughtfully provided the good people of Nottingham with a selection of large posters in the City centre and on various buses featuring the word 'SAFER' above photos of a Fireman, a Council warden (community protection officer), PCSO and Police Constable.

Do these posters make us safer because of some sort of sympathetic magic?

Or is it telling us that we are safer in a 'you are safer because we are telling you that you are safe'?

Or is it a poster reminding us that the people featured in the poster are safer than the average person because they are trained and equipped to deal with dangerous situations than ever before?

I just think they are probably just a waste of money to be honest and I doubt we are any safer regardless.

Man murdered in night bus attack

A man has died after being stabbed during a row on a night bus.
Police said the victim, aged 21, was attacked by two men on bus number N159 as it travelled through Croydon, south London, in the early hours of Saturday.

Officers were called to Gravel Hill at the junction with Selsdon Park Road where they found a man suffering from stab wounds. He died later in hospital.

Passengers on the bus at about 0300 GMT have been urged to contact police.

Both suspects were seen running away along Selsdon Park Road after the attack.

So we have gotten to the point where we can be murdered presumably by strangers in a public place, in full view of other people.

How senseless, how terrible it must be for the victim's family.

How does anyone avoid being the victim of so called random violence?

Well it isn't easy. For starters one has to realise that this sort of violence happens. Despite all the CCTV that follows our every move in public, despite the fact that we have strict weapons laws that the police enforce enthusiastically, despite the fact that our City centres are generally well lit and quite busy 24 hours a day.

Realise that violent criminals get let out of prison every day. Realise that their time spent inside will not make them think twice about hurting you and your family. Realise that mentally ill people are wandering around our city centres having been released in the 'community' and the authorities often loose track of them once they start to forget to take their medication.

One has to accept that certain habits can seriously increase your odds of being the victim of a violent crime. Night Buses, late night take-a-ways, late night taxi ranks and the areas just outside night clubs are relatively high risk. Put yourself in these places and add into the mix too much drink and you really are likely to see or experience some unpleasantness at some point.

Of course no one should suggest that we all stay at home and no one wants to be too quick to think it might happen to them. Wake up to the fact that violence is a part of some people's daily lives. The trick is to make sure you don't experience it at all.

Don't get so drunk that your judgement is badly affected. If you don't recognise danger as it develops, you stand a good chance of being the victim of all sorts of crime.

Young men are the most likely people to be the victims of violent crime. Drunk young men especially.

Don't rely on a crowd to keep you safe. I read somewhere that in a crowd everyone expects someone else to act first, and they all look to each other to make the first move. This means that if you feel safe just because there are a lot of people around you are deluding yourself.

What you learn about self defence and how you live your life is up to you, but the first step has got to be to realise that the Police, our strict weapons laws, CCTV and a crowd of people around you, do not keep you as safe as you might have thought.

Ray Floro's System had to say....

Ray Floro is the finest edged weapon expert that I have had the honour to train with. It is the simplicity and effectiveness of Ray’s system that has allowed the adoption of some his concepts into the current military unarmed combat program. I strongly recommend the Floro Fighting System as a no frills edged weapon system that really works.

Ray reminds me of a physics professor who once told me that progress comes from reducing the principles needed to explain how the world works.
Ray is like that-- he is not just non-telegraphic and really quick, he is a thoughtful man who seeks the essence.
